The El Camino Real project in Hatch, New Mexico is designed to create a place that farming families can call home. The design creates a culturally appropriate setting where residents feel connected to their social and natural environment. This design is able to provide this ‘sense of place’ with a very small environmental footprint. Cultural appropriateness and environmental responsiveness have been used as guidelines for all design decisions in this project from the layout of the site and buildings, to the views out of windows and the accommodations for the residents’ work tools.
